Exploring the “Last Forbidden Kingdom”
The breathtaking landscapes, ancient caves and majestic views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Nigiri and several other mountains are what make up Upper Mustang Trek. The cultural and historical richness of Upper Mustang adds the value to its natural offerings to any trekker from around the world.
The trek is of moderate level leading to maximum elevation of 3840m at Lo-Manthang and requiring 5-6 hours of daily walk. This region was opened to the trekkers only after 1990. While the limited number of trekkers explored this region until few years back, the number is increasing significantly in the recent times. The unique offerings of Upper Mustang make it one of the most rewarding treks on earth. Since Upper Mustang is a restricted region the foreign trekkers need to pay to Department of Immigration at Kathmandu $500 for a 10-days trip and $10 per day for extended trip.
The trekkers need to travel to Pokhara from Kathmandu and then to Jomsom before starting the trek. They have option of taking flights or road trip to Pokhara and Jomsom respectively. The trek starts from Jomsom along the mountain valley anchored by the great Kali Gandaki River and ends at the historic Lo-Manthang, the ancient capital of kingdom of Lo.
